There’s lots of blog posts out there that will tell you what you’re doing wrong in your copy. (I know I’ve written a few.) But who’s going to tell you how to get it right?

Because I want you to get great results from your emails, I’m breaking it down for you. Here’s 5 things you can start doing in your emails now to improve your copy and get your subscribers to love you.

Ask people to reply

I’ve shared this tip before for welcome emails, but you can include it in all sorts of emails. It’s a great way to get to know who’s on your list and how you can help them.

I ask new subscribers to reply to my welcome email and tell me what they’re struggling with most when it comes to email and the answers are pure gold. They’ve inspired blog posts, Facebook lives, and emails. Those pieces of content have done really well because they’re directly inspired by my audience.

Tell personal stories

People love stories and email is the perfect medium for sharing them. It’s especially great for getting personal. Email feels very one to one. Even if you’re sending it out to thousands of people, it can still feel like you’re talking to one person. You don’t always have to be vulnerable or messy, but pull back the curtain every once in awhile and share who you are with your list. The results could surprise you.

A few weeks ago I shared the story of how I got started with email marketing. I showed that I didn’t start out as an expert and that it’s okay if you’re not one yet. That email got such a great response. I had people replying that my story inspired them and thanking me for sharing it.

Share testimonials

Testimonials are gold for any type of sales copy. They’re the proof that you can deliver what you promise. Sprinkle them throughout your sales sequence to build trust and show that you know your stuff.

Even if you have a page on your site just for testimonials, you still need them in your emails. Some people might not click over to see all the amazing things people have to say about you. You can use the same testimonials, but put them where your buyers are sure to see them.

Keep your paragraphs short

Keep your paragraphs short and easy to read. (Sometimes a sentence is a paragraph.) On mobile, long paragraphs look like giant walls of text. No one wants to scroll through that! People like to scan when they read online, so huge blocks of text get skipped over.

Use formatting to break up your copy. Add bullet points or numbered lists. Bold important phrases to make them stand out. Make it easy for people to catch the most important parts of your message.

Include ONE call to action

Keep it simple for your subscribers by including just ONE call to action per email. If you ask them to follow you on Twitter, join your Facebook group, check out your new blog post, and buy your course...they’re probably not going to do anything.

If you have 3 or 4 things you want to share with them, those could be 3 or 4 separate emails. It’s fine to email your list more frequently with shorter, more focused emails. You’ll see better results when you narrow down your emails to one big idea and one call to action.
