How to get over email envy

Which emails do you always read? I don’t mean the ones you eventually get around to when you’re looking for a coupon code, or the ones that languish in your unread folder until you decide to check them out. I’m talking about the ones you open the moment they hit your inbox.

What makes them so great?

The subject lines are always click worthy. They can make the most mundane story sound interesting (even if it’s just about buying a mattress). They email you often, but they never come across as annoying. They get you to hit reply and start a conversation.

You want to be able to talk to your list like that. How come your subscribers never email you back raving about your last email? Why aren’t your emails creating a reaction and causing people to hire you on the spot?

You’re experiencing email envy.

Email envy is a real problem. A lot of entrepreneurs just like you go through it (and put off sending emails because of it). But I’ve got the antidote for it. I’m going to tell you step by step how to get over email envy so YOU can be the one sending great emails to your list.

The first step is to figure out what you like about that other person’s emails.

Do they tease their content in the subject line so you’re chomping at the bit to open the email just to find out what they’re talking about? Do they pack their emails with personality so you feel like you already know them? Are their emails quick to read but full of insight you never want to miss?

What specifically about these emails trigger your email envy? What makes these emails the ones you always open? When you can figure out what attracts you to someone else’s email, you can move on to step 2.

The next step is figuring out what it would take to do these things with your own emails.

Chances are if you’re jealous of someone else’s fun and quirky emails, it’s because you know your personality isn’t showing up in your copy. If you wish you could email your list every day without irritating your subscribers, it’s probably because deep down you know you should be emailing more often, too. If you’ve got subject line envy, it’s probably because you’ve been phoning it in with yours and going with the obvious every time.

Instead of feeling jealous of someone else’s emails, figure out how you can make your emails stand out, too.

If you need to email more frequently, create a new email schedule. (And stick to it!)

If you want to add more stories to your emails, start writing down the funny and interesting things that happen to you. I have a story file on my phone to keep track of ideas. Even if it seems totally unrelated to my business, I make a note. You never know what’s going to spark inspiration when you sit down to write that email.

If you’re stuck on a subject line, get some help. Use a free tool like CoSchedule Headline Analyzer to tweak your subject line to something more interesting. Or use subject line formulas to get some new ideas. You don’t have to start from scratch every time.

If you’re tired of feeling email envy every time someone sends a great email, I’m here to help. You can hire me to write your emails here. We’ll get your emails looking just as good (or better!) so you can end your email envy once and for all.
